Imagine the most rewarding thing you’ve ever done. Imagine the most heart-wrenching. Imagine they’re the same thing. “It” is raising a puppy for the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind.

When you become a puppy walker for the Guide Dog Foundation, you embark on what will be one of the most fulfilling experiences you’ve ever had – making a difference in the life of someone with disabilities by raising a puppy to become a guide or service dog.

Without our family of puppy raisers – called “Puppy Walkers” (but they do far more than walk puppies) – there would be no guide dogs for people who are blind or visually impaired, no service dogs for people with other disabilities.

We’re looking for special people to open their hearts and homes to help start a puppy on its career as a guide or service dog. Won’t you join our family?

Governor David Paterson of New York is the first legally blind governor in the United States since a lieutenant governor of Arkansas, who had been blinded in World War II, became governor for 11 days in 1975. In the 20th century, there were a handful of politicians who were blind and served in the U.S. Congress.

Paterson is an advocate for people with disabilities, and his assumption of the role of governor will increase the profile of people who are blind or visually impaired.

The Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind has developed an “etiquette tip sheet” for what to say and do – and not say and do – when you meet a person who is blind or visually impaired. Click here for the list.
